Where is it safe to practice the use of a samurai sword?
I live in the UK. Samurai swords are legal here for the moment, although it’s 4 years just for walking down the street with one. My flat’s too small. Any suggestions?
Sure look around the net in your region and see if there is a Kendo, kenjitsu, Iado school of sword teaching. A friends house with a yard or garage or basement?
most importantly, Make sure you try and find a teacher learning from a book in this case can prove fatal. GET A bokken and Shinai for certain and do your best to find a teacher. IF YOU have no luck finding a teacher, at least you will have safer gear to use if you are using a book, which would be a last resort to use in my opinion. Nothing replaces that of having the real teacher.
If you just bought it to play with as a toy, then DONT. Its not a toy. but i think you know this already, try your best to get a teacher.
If not then look for an open area away from the public or at least many people where you can practice alone or in quiet in the woods or at a friends basement or maybe at a public park with permission, but in that case i would definately use the bokken because taking a real katana into a public park may get you in trouble. they may not be illegal, but it is a weapon and can be misunderstood and you could find your self with the cops surrounding you. Lucky you in the UK and you dont get shot first before they try to disarm you. Here in many parts of the USA they shoot and look later.
Not that cops are bad they are not, they are great. It is the training in the UK is differant than for US police. I am by no means degrading any police force, the are well needed and have my respect for sure.

Definately practice with two differant practice swords. One is the wooden bokken, the other is called a Shinai and it is made of bamboo and is used often in the kendo classes and you see them alot in WWE wrestling. They do not hurt only sting when you are struck, they are also great for practise against a live opponent because without all the kendo gear to protect you a bokken will feel like getting hit by a baseball bat.
Of course you do not want to use a live blade on another in practise with out gear either so Iado is great for practice with a live blade and kendo is great for live one on one training with a bokken or Shinai, and then Kenjitsu if you want to slice and cut things with a live blade that are not living.
