Are mini-blinds “out” of style, as far as home furnishings?
Just as in fashion, home furnishings and decor styles change, evolve, and come and go. It seems to me that mini-blinds are now passe. I get this impression from HGTV when designers discuss a home. Just like sometimes they’ll say a kitchen needs “upgrading” if it doesn’t have stainless steel and granite. So what about mini-blinds? Still in, or out, as in avocado green refrigerators and bookcase headboards? What else is out? What’s in? Be sure to tell me about mini blinds!
I am an Interior Decorator who specializes in window treatments. Mini blinds have been replaced by so many other shade/blind choices. My clients who have mini blinds in good shape keep them if they are strictly for utilitarian purposes and layered behind updated drapery/valance styles. The mini blinds are hidden, not a focal point or the main window fashion, so it is sometimes economical to keep them. Having that been said, none of my clients ASK for mini blinds. I am designing and installing a lot of Roman Shades these days because they can be made with insulated linings to increase the energy efficiency of windows. Balloon shades are definitely ‘out’ of window treatment fashion. As is drapery that puddles on the floor.
Decorating styles that are ‘out’ is furniture which have large rolled arms. This style was introduced when all the Mc Mansions were built and required large scale furniture. However, the manufacturers found that people with normal size homes could not forfeit the additional two feet to accommodate the arms. Entertainment centers are ‘out’ as electronics (DVD players and flat screen TV’s) have become streamlined and don’t need a lot of storage space. I am converting a lot of entertainment center armories into free standing pantries in the kitchen or linen storage in over sized hallways.
Colors that are ‘out’ are: seafoam green, peach and country blue. Fabrics that are ‘out’ are Chintz.
