can you break the major artery under your arm pit yourself or can only a knife do it?

Most arteries are fairly well protected under layers of muscle in the body. You are unlikely to break the axillary artery (as the artery under your armpit is called) using pressure only. Even a sharp blow is not likely to rupture the vein, especially given the difficulty of sustaining a sharp blow to the underside of the arm.
The one exception would be in the case of a low causing a fracture of the humerus in your upper arm. It is possible for the fractured bone to lacerate the axillary artery.
A sharp foreign object (such as a knife) is the most likely cause of laceration to the axillary artery, but is still unlikely as the location of the artery on the underside of the arm affords it protection from most unintentional damage.
