Can someone give the main points to The Subtle Knife (His Dark Materials Series #2) book?
I have read the first two golden compass books, but it has been like three years now, and i just got the third one, and for the life of me i can’t remember how the second one ends, besides few main things in the book, i’m lost. If someone who read it could give me the main ideas, and tell me how it ended, it would be much appreciated. So i can read the third one without being completely out of it.
Spoilers for people who haven’t read The Subtle Knife! To shorten things the books will be known as TSK for The subtle Knife, TGC for The Golden Compass and TAS for The Amber Spyglass.
Ok so at the end of The Golden Compass Lyra and her dæmon Pan (short for Pantalaimon you know) walk out of their world and enter Cittagazze through a window cut in the fabric of the worlds. At the beginning of TSK. Will Parry finds out that people are trying to steal a case from him that contains letters from his father. Will’s father went missing on a scientific mission up North. Will wants to find him and thats partially what the book is about. Will finding his father. The other part is about Lyra finding out what Dust is.
So Will wanders into Cittagazze and meets Lyra. Then they go back to Wills world and Lyra talks to Marry Mallone about Dust. In Wills World Marry calls it Shadow Particles. Basically Dust is matter that hasn’t been made yet. (I know i’m not making any sense sorry but thats what it says) It’s free thinking and innocence 
So then after words Lyra gets her alethiometer stolen by That guy with the snake dæmon (rember the guy at Mrs. Coulters cocktail party? well thats him) Then Lyra and Will go on a mission to get it back.
The guy tells them that he wants this Subtle knife from Cittagazze but cant get it becasue of the specters (things that feed on your soul/dæmon). Will wins the Knife from Angela’s brother and so becomes the Knife bearer. He looses two fingers on his left hand in the process. The knife can cut through worlds. Will uses it to enter his world and steal the knife out of the man with the snake dæmons house.
Then they begin looking for Wills Father (there are other parts to, when they meet up with the witches and a Part about Lee, Will breaking the Knife) He finds him on the mountain in cittagazee.
Lee Scoresby had found Wills father in Lyra’s world after figuring out the connection that Wills Father was Gunman (mentianed in the first chapter of TGC. Lord Asriel said that he was dead but lied about it to get money from the college). Lee dies while helping Will’s father find the Knife Bearer. (Wills father does not know that the Knife Bearer is his own son). So like I said Will meets his father at the base of the mountain. But a witch shoots Wills father before he can do anything. Wills father dies but not before he tells Will to bring the Knife to Lord Asriel and help him fight the battle against the Authority.
At the end of the book Mrs. Coulter (Lyra’s Mother) kidnapps Lyra and brings her to a cave in their world. Will returns and finds that Lyra is missing. He finds the bag with the alethiometer in it and brings that with him. He meets two (supposely gay) angels and convinces them to help him find Lyra before he goes to Lord Asriel. The second book ends with him meeting the Angels.
TAS starts with Mrs. Coulter in a cave and Lyra asleep.
