Most mothers like to use the disposable nappies of today – simple to put on and just dispose of. You already know that is what most people use today and you should follow suit, but what about the cost and the waste for the environment. “Au Naturelle” is what you think is best for baby, having natural towelling against their tender soft skin; cloth nappies are also ecological and economical. The question is how to turn a the rectangular shape of a cloth nappy into a cover comfy enough for your dear cherub?

1. Wash the New Nappies

Remove the nappies from the plastic wrapper that comes in, but never use it on your baby straightaway. During manufacturing, the nappies are given a ‘waxy’ coating which are not ready to absorb anything and will also be irritable to baby’s skin. These new nappies should be tossed straight into your washing machine on a hot wash for about five or six cycles, using bleach and detergent. Dry them out on a washing cycle if the weather is nice, which is the best method for drying them.

2. How to Fold Nappies

You have already decided on using cloth nappies, but did you know that there also a wide choice on the market today? The supermarket stock more types of 100% natural cloth nappies, than the range in disposable ones – All-in-Ones, All-In-Twos, Flat-Folded, Nappy-Style, Padded and Pre-Folded. Wow, what a headspinner, so many choices at your disposal, and how to take it all in. Once you have absorbed all that, there are the range of nappy covers to choose from including plastic pants and wool covers. Then you need to decide on the types of fasteners – pins, velcro or one of the fancier novelty type fasteners now available.

Just for now, we will just concentrate on the plain, simple rectangular nappies, made of absorbent cotton which may have running down the middle an extra quilted layer for more absorbency. 3. The Angel Wing Fold

1 With your nappy placed lengthways on a changing table, take the sides and fold them into the middle, forming a pad for absorbency.

2 Take the front and fold it a few inches.

3 At the back, you can now unfold those sides and fan them out.

4 Place your baby on the nappy now, pulling up the front through your baby’s legs.

5 Hold the front in place against baby’s belly, bringing the sides from the back so that they come around the front, pinning them into place. The pin should come through a few layers, but there is no need to have it coming up against your baby’s skin.

4. Bikini Twist High Cut Fold

1 Lay the nappy out flat on the changing table.

2 Take one end and completely turn it over, twisting it at midpoint level to form the absorbency pad.

3 Place your baby down on the nappy (or if you find it easier, place the nappy underneath your baby).

4 The front can now be pulled up between your baby’s legs.

5 The back corners of the nappy can now be pulled around your baby, so that they sit over the front corners and then securely pinned.

5. A Double Nappy for Babies that are Wetter

1 Take a regular nappy and lay it on the table. Now get an infant sized nappy and place that in the centre.

2 The sides of the infant nappy should be folded in, followed by the sides of the regular size to cover the infant nappy.

3 Take a few inches at the front of the nappy and fold it up, fanning out the back to form the angel wings.

4 Place your baby onto the middle of the nappy, and follow the procedure outlined as in the Angel Wing Fold.

By practising these Nappy Folding Methods, you will find one that works best for you, or you may want to chop and change for variety. Finish off with a nappy cover, and your baby is ready to toddle off again and play, a dry, warm bottom in tow.
