That’s a tall order, going over the various over the various media products relating to the Batman franchise! By the by, one of Batman’s noms de guerre is “The Dark Knight,” not “Black Knight.” I’ll just hit a few landmarks for you to find your way through the Batman mythology.
Well for starters, you should start with his origin story. DC Comics (publisher of the various Batman comic book titles) put up on their Web site a very convenient two-page synopsis of his origins, in comic book format no less!
Regarding movie adaptations, the most recent one in the public consciousness is the film directed by Christopher Nolan (director of Memento) entitled BATMAN BEGINS. He is currently filming the sequel THE DARK KNIGHT.
In the 90s, Tim Burton directed BATMAN and BATMAN RETURNS respectively. Joel Schumacher took over this particular run of sequels with BATMAN FOREVER and BATMAN FOREVER. Schumacher’s over-the-top kitsch offended the sensibilities of many Batman fans, which they blame for the ending of the franchise until Nolan’s revival in the 21st century. Nolan’s films shares no story line continuity to the earlier versions–his version was essentially a reboot of the Batman mythos
Some Notable Batman Villains:
The Joker–a psychotic and unpredictable criminal mastermind with a macabre sense of humor; his bizarre appearance references the joker in a deck of cards. Largely considered Batman’s greatest nemesis.
Two-Face–former District Attorney Harvey Dent becomes hideously scarred with acid while trying a mob boss, disfiguring the left half of his face. This trauma combined with past abuse fractures his psyche, creating the criminal persona of Two-Face, who is obsessed with themes of duality. This is made most manifest when he makes important decisions based on the flip of a two-headed coin, one side marked with scars to parallel his own face.
Scarecrow–former professor turned criminal uses his knowledge of drugs and psychology to manipulate others’ phobias. Naturally, he dresses like a scarecrow.
Eh, the list goes on and on, but you can find links to Batman’s extensive rogue’s gallery in Wikipedia. I’ve listed three that are likely to be featured in the next upcoming film. Also note that the movie versions may provide varying background stories for featured characters than the comic characters.
